The research examines how strategy process can combine both systematic and entrepreneurial decision making approaches. The resulting strategy for future competences will ensure that the critical competencies for future growth are available when needed. The process used in the development supports the company’s strategic decision making and allows for flexible responses to changing markets and customer needs. Action research was employed as the research method, enabling close collaboration with the target company throughout the development process. Data was collected through interviews and a survey. Additionally, in workshops, participants created images of the future and analyzed the business potential of the target company in each of them. From these, strategic options and the final strategy were derived. Toward the end of the development process, future strategic capabilities and related competence needs were identified. After further refinement and prioritizing the competence needs were placed on a timeline. The strategy for anticipating future competence needs, resulting from the development work, was considered successful and practical by the target company. Through this process, the company was able to refine its customer segments, focus its business model, and build a scalable business structure for growth. Moreover, anticipating future competence needs was found as an important strategic theme, guiding the company’s development and growth. While the results of action research are not broadly generalizable, the strategic process developed during the study provides a practical foundation for future research aimed at improving the competitiveness and strategic decision making of startup companies....
